What is a lumen?
Lumens measure how much light you are getting from a bulb. The more lumens you have the brighter the light; fewer lumens means it's a dimmer light.
Do lumens matter?
Yes they do however it also depends on the ambient light conditions and which mode you are using. A 10 lumen rear light with a flashing pattern can be more effective than a 80 lumen solid beam at getting you noticed.
How many lumens should my front bike light be?
For general road use between 400 and 1000 lumens is recommended. For off-road use or unlit roads 1000+ lumens is advisable. Just make sure you're not dazzling other road users.
How many lumens should my rear bike light be?
A rear bike light can range from 5 lumens up to 300 lumens. Remember your rear light is about being seen rather than lighting your way. Look out for flashing patterns and breaking modes rather than a super high lumen rating.
